Donkeys have for many years been an integral part of the Connemara landscape and Joyce Country is no exception.  Their use in the past was generally for farm work such as gathering turf from the bogs and collecting hay.  However, these functions are now largely undertaken by quad bikes and tractors.  Therefore, the donkey is now mainly regarded as a pet/organic lawnmower!

Furthermore, it has long been considered lucky for sheep farmers to keep donkeys among their flocks.  At Joyce Country Sheepdogs we have 2 friendly donkeys Seamie and Sile who are available for visitors to meet and hand feed.
